There are 5 Yamas as per Patanjali Yogdarshan.
Yamas mean The Rules to be followed by Sadhaka ( Yoga Student)
in the society.
1. Ahimsa (non-violence),
2. Satya (truthfulness),
3. Asteya (non-stealing),
4. Brahmacharya (celibacy) and
5. Aparigraha (non-covetousness)
Maharishi Patanjali has mentioned that These are to be followed as
" Mahavratas" i.e. very very strictly without a single exception.
He says that these Yamas are not affected by time, place, race, caste, creed etc.
They are true forever.
Following these Yamas regiorously lead sadhaka special gift called Siddhis, like
the person who follows Ahimsa as Mahavrata, he gets Vachasiddhi, i.e. whatever he /she talks become truth. Each Yama has different siddhi.
